The concept of emotional intelligence is rooted in scholarship from the 1990s. The basic idea is to be aware of the emotions involved in interpersonal exchanges, of self and other, and be sure we’re expressing our emotions appropriately. The ability to responsibly manage our emotional expressions makes all of the difference in our lives and the levels of success we’re able to achieve.

High levels of emotional intelligence improve working relationships, strengthen problem-solving skills, improve efficiency and effectiveness, and catalyze new strategy development.

Dr. Daniel Goleman, a career scholar of emotional intelligence and whose essential ideas on emotional intelligence are represented in this course, describes emotional intelligence as a different way of being smart. He says it is a crucial factor that underlies high performance and exceptional leadership. For individuals at this level, he says, “It’s not your IQ. It’s how you manage yourself and your relationships.”

For leaders, emotional intelligence is critical to inspiring teams, delivering feedback, empathizing with colleagues, working toward shared goals, managing stress, and staying focused.

·       Studies show that 90% of top performers have high emotional intelligence and a higher average income

·       A survey of founders indicated 95% hold emotional intelligence in leadership more important than IQ

·       Empathic leaders perform more than 40% higher in employee engagement, decision-making, and coaching

·       Those with high levels of emotional intelligence earn more too—an average of $29,000 more annually
